The Colosseum, and the floor that isn't there

The most striking thing about Rome's amphitheatre is the part that's missing — the exposed basement that reveals how the whole machine worked.

Most ancient monuments need explaining. The Colosseum doesn't. You walk in, look at the tiered seating curving up and away, and understand immediately what the building was for — because we still build stadiums to the same basic plan.

That familiarity is the trick of the place. It looks legible. The interesting part is what's underneath.

The missing floor

The arena floor is largely gone, and what that exposes is the hypogeum — a two-level basement of passages, chambers and shafts that ran beneath the sand.

This was the working part of the building. It held holding cells, storage, and a system of lifts and trapdoors operated by capstans and counterweights, which could raise animals and scenery up into the arena. Things appeared from below rather than being led in through a gate.

Standing at the rail and looking down into that warren does more to convey what the building actually was than any amount of intact seating would. It's a machine, and you can see its workings.

Built fast, and built to move people

Completed around AD 80, the amphitheatre could hold a very large crowd — estimates vary considerably, but the order of magnitude is tens of thousands.

The genuinely impressive engineering is the circulation. A dense ring of numbered entrance arches fed a system of stairs and vaulted corridors designed to fill and empty the building quickly, with spectators routed to sections according to social rank. Ticket-holders carried tokens indicating their entrance and tier.

Anyone who has left a modern stadium in a slow shuffle can appreciate the ambition.

The outside is a story of subtraction

The exterior is missing a large portion of its outer wall. That absence isn't the result of a single dramatic event — earthquakes did structural damage over the centuries, and afterwards the ruin served for a long period as a convenient source of cut stone and metal for other buildings in the city.

You can see the evidence directly: pockmarks across the surviving stonework where iron clamps binding the blocks were dug out for reuse.

A monument being quarried by its own city is a very ordinary fate for a large ruin, and it's worth remembering as you look at it — this is not what time alone does to a building.

What happened here

It's usual to talk around this. Briefly and plainly: the Colosseum hosted gladiatorial combat, staged animal hunts, and public executions, as mass entertainment, over a long period. The spectacle was violent and the violence was the point.

That sits uncomfortably alongside admiring the vaulting, and it probably should. A building can be an extraordinary piece of engineering and a venue for something appalling, and the honest response is to hold both rather than picking one.

Practicalities of the visit

The Colosseum sits in central Rome, adjacent to the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill, and the three are usually visited together — they're contiguous, and they make far more sense as one site than as three attractions.

Two things reliably improve the day. Go at an end of the day rather than the middle, for both light and crowds. And if access to the arena floor or the hypogeum is available when you go, take it — those are the vantage points that turn a famous silhouette into a comprehensible building.
